In the third Women’s Murder Club series, James Patterson, along with his collaborator Andrew Gross, has crafted a thought provoking tale involving murder, a beautiful successful woman and threats of terrorism, all in the splendid backdrop of San Francisco. The city itself becomes a character. Although, 3rd Degree is a one of a series, it stands by itself and it is not necessary to have read the previous volumes in order to enjoy this one. It will, however, make you want to retrace your steps and learn more about the fascinating characters Mr. Patterson has brought to life in 1st to Die and 2nd Chance. Andrew Gross was also a collaborator on 2nd Chance.

Lindsay Boxer is a homicide detective for the San Francisco Police Department and the focal point of the novel. She also narrates the story. Lindsay enlists her friends, Cindy Thomas a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, Claire Washburn, the chief Medical Examiner for San Francisco and Jill Bernhardt an Assistance District Attorney to help her make sense of a horrific series of events that will leave you breathless. This story also introduces Joe Molinari, who quickly becomes Lindsay's new love interest.

A bomb, a cryptic message, a mysterious group called the “August Spies”, domestic abuse, one of the heroines is going to die, terrorism, an upcoming economic summit of the world’s most powerful nations, a romance for Lindsay, and it’s all rolled up in approximately 6.5 hours. It hardly seems possible, but it’s all there.

The narrator, Carolyn McCormick is an accomplished actress. She has appeared on some of televisions top rated shows, to name a few: Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, New York Undercover, Spencer for Hire, The Practice, Judging Amy, and Star Trek. Her mellow voice has just the right mix of inflection.

This is Mr. Patterson’s 25th book, I can’t wait for number 26.
