Annie Adams Fields (1834 - 1915) and her husband, James T. Fields (1817–81) were well-known and respected literary figures of their day. James was a writer, and the owner of the Boston publishing company, Ticknor and Fields. While his wife, Annie, a respected author in her own right, was also the hostess of a literary saloon that attracted intellectuals from both the artistic and political communities. In this collection of books, Richard Seltzer has compiled a selection of books based upon those mentioned in Authors and Friends by Annie Fields and Yesterdays with Authors by James T. Fields. The text of both of these books, along with biographical information about the Fields, is included in this collection.
In all, this outstanding collection includes more than 170 titles, all on one CD. In addition to the text of Authors and Friends, Yesterdays with Authors, and biographical information about the Fields, this collection also features works by:
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
William Makepeace Thackeray
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Charles Dickens
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nathaniel Hawthorne
John Greenleaf Whittier
Biographies and biographical information about these authors is also included.
A sampling of the titles found in this collection includes such classics as:
Song of Hiawatha
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Becket and Other Plays
Vanity Fair
The House of the Seven Gables
The Scarlet Letter
David Copperfield
Great Expectations
Oliver Twist
and many more, too numerous to mention.
These various works by authors that the Fields knew, serve not only to provide context in which to study the Fields' works, but they also provide an excellent sampling of some of the best literary works of the late nineteenth century. Best of all, this collection offers readers the opportunity to acquire a wealth of literary works for less than twenty dollars, which comes out to around twelve cents a book! Making this collection a cost-effective means of increasing the literary titles contained in any home or public library.
In addition, all the books in this collection are presented in plain text (ASCII) format. This format makes the texts easily accessible for visually impaired readers using most screen reading (text-to-speech) or computer magnification programs.
This CD is designed for use with a Windows based PC. You will also need to have a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape) and/or a Windows based word-processing program such as Microsoft Word, or Corel's Word Perfect, in order to read the text. Once you open a book file, you can change the font size and format to suit your individual visual needs.
