Trumps of Doom is the sixth book in Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber series. It also represents the first book in the second part of the series, as the first five books represent a complete story line. While the first five books in the series focused mainly on Corwin, the Trumps of Doom focuses on Merle Corey a.k.a. Merlin, the son of Prince Corwin. In this installment, we discover that Corwin has possibly gone mad, and has definitely gone missing. Merle, for his part, spends his time in California working as a computer hacker. He is also the yearly target of a mysterious attacker who has tried repeatedly, but has always failed, to kill him.

This year, however, the attack is so severe that he is forced to flee from the Shadow Earth that he has called home. In doing so, he uses a device he has created called the Ghostwheel that allows its user to transcend interdimensional boundaries at will. Once away from the Shadow Earth, Merle sets out to track down the forces behind the attacks on his life. What he discovers is that the attacks on his life are part of a bigger plan to destroy all of Amber.

Although I recommend that you read the entire Chronicles of Amber series in order, it is possible to start with Trumps of Doom as it is really the start of new series, albeit one that is built upon the world created in the first five books. In addition to giving the reader a meaty mystery to deal with, Zelazny also provides the reader with an imaginative and exciting trip into a fantastical world that will delight the senses. His writing is rich in imagery. His characters are full-bodied, and the story engrossing and quick-paced. However, like the other books in this series, Trumps of Doom ends with a cliffhanger, so you'll want to have a copy of the seventh book in the Chronicles of Amber series, Blood of Amber on hand so that you can immediately continue with the story. This is one of the biggest advantages of reading a series long after it was first published - you don't have to wait a year or two for the next installment!
