A cozy mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, Artists in Crime, by Ngaio Marsh is a thrilling, fast-paced mystery. This case focuses on the murder of Sonia Gluck, an artist's model who was stabbed while posing for a painting. Inspector Roderick Alleyn of Scotland Yard is assigned the task of unearthing Gluck's murderer. The main suspect in this case is the talented Agatha Troy, whom Gluck was posing for when she was murdered. Troy is an artist who inflames Alleyn's passions, and who challenges his deduction skills.

Artists in Crime was written and is set in the 1930's and the stories settings, mannerisms, and language all serve to transport you back to this bygone era. This story ably depicts England before the horrors of World War II descended upon the country, while also providing the reader with a well-woven yarn filled with multiple suspects, lots of red-herrings, and the burgeoning of a charming love story between Troy and Alleyn.

Inspector Roderick Alleyn appeared in a number of Marsh's mysteries, and this is one of the early Alleyn stories. It provides some keen insights into Alleyn's personality and personal relationships, including his close relationship with his mother. Artists in Crime is a must read for fans of the Alleyn series, and while it may not be the best book that Marsh wrote, it is still a fun book to read and it provides a challenging mystery for you to try to solve before Alleyn does. The characters are well-wrought, the descriptions vibrant, and the prose enthralling. Artists in Crime is a fine who-dunn-it for a lazy afternoon when you just want to sit back and enjoy a good mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end!
