Australia has a rich heritage that is amply demonstrated in its literature and its history. In Australia: Literature and History, Richard Seltzer has complied a selection of outstanding works by Australians, and about Australia. This collection contains 13 works of Australian literature, and 14 books that chronicle Australian history. These 26 books have all be collected onto one CD, which costs about the same price as one hardcovered book!
Australian Literature
Australia is a vast land that evokes heroic images. These heroic images populate Australian literature, such as in the poem, The Man from Snowy River, by Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson. White Coolies, by Betty Jeffrey.
On February 12, 1942 the Vyner Brooke left Singapore carrying a full complement of refugees, including 65 Australian nursing sisters. Two days later, the ship was sunk by the Japanese. Fifty-three nurses reached Bangka Island. Of these, 21 were machined gunned to death after surrendering to the Japanese. The remaining 32 nurses were taken prisoners and spent the next three and half years struggling to survive. White Coolies is the story of their epic ordeal. (Audio)
