Between, Georgia is the second book by Joshilyn Jackson. Following on the heals of her success in Gods in Alabama, Jackson brings us another heartwarming story that is Chick Lit at its best! Set in Georgia, this is the story of a woman caught between of host of forces over which she has no control, yet throughout she manages to stay strong and persevere through all the heartache and sorrow to become a stronger, more self-assured, and unforgettable woman.
This engaging tale starts in the town of Between, Georgia with the birth of Nonny Frett to the poor and unmarried Hazel Crabtree. Born into the Crabtree family, Nonny is raised by the wealthy and powerful Fretts, and the circumstances surrounding her change of residency is the cause of what is to become a long running feud between the Crabtrees and the Fretts. From her birth onwards, Nonny finds herself time and time again at the center of contention. As the story unfolds, we meet Nonny when she is grown and caught between two men, two families, two mothers, a job she hates, and a child she loves. To put is mildly, Nonny's life started out turbulent, and has remained so ever since.
Between, Georgia is a delightful story full of quirky and believable characters, all caught up in circumstances that long ago took on a life of their own. Jackson's writing is vivacious and cheeky, and Nonny's plight unforgettable. This is a classic coming of age tale, other than the fact that the protagonist is thirty. The story finds Nonny at a cross-roads in her life. Does she stay in the city that she has run to to escape her past or does she return to Between, where her heart truly lies? To complicate matters there is a failing marriage, a possible new love, an unwanted baby that only Nonny could love, one mother who is deaf and blind and another who is half crazy - and both need her. The choices that she makes and how these choices affect her and those around her make this book one that you will likely read more than once, and then pass it around to all your friends. Surely this is the best book to come out this year! As an added bonus, this audio edition of this book is read by the author herself.
