Julius Caesar is one of William Shakespeare's most gripping tragedies. At its heart it is an historic thriller of epic proportions. The story takes place shortly after Julius Caesar's defeat of Pompey. During this period Rome was a Republic, and many of Caesar's cohorts soon begin to worry that he has set his sights on overthrowing the Republic so that he could become the sole ruler of Rome. While Caesar is at the height of his power, he is helpless to forestall the court intrigues and backroom politicking that swirled around him. For one of his friends, Brutus, it soon becomes apparent that he must subdue his personal feelings in order to do whatever is best for the Republic - even if it means killing his friend!
Shakespeare play Julius Caesar is based upon true instances in Roman history and the play follows the events leading up to Julius Caesar's assassination and the ensuing civil war that erupted. This is a story about duty, loyalty, and greed and how men with various motivations are often drawn together in pursuit of a common goal. This is not a play for anyone seeking an upbeat story. The characters in this play, as their real life counterparts, met, on the most part, tragic ends. Their deaths and the accompanying carnage that resulted from the political machinations and warfare that surrounded the death of Julius Caesar are heart wrenchingly portrayed within the confines of this remarkable tale.
