The twins, Alex and Conner Bailey are back for another heart pounding adventure in The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns. If you've not read the first book in this series The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell, the Land of Stories is a mystical world inhabited by familiar fairy tale characters such as Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks, Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, Mother Goose, and the like. The twins initially found their way into the Land of Stories when they 'fell' into it through a book of fairy tales. When the Bailey's were last in the Land of Stories, Sleeping Beauty had been cursed by an evil Enchantress. In this, the second adventure, the evil Enchantress has returned to terrorize not only the residents of the Land of Stories, but also those on the 'outside.' This is a fact that becomes all too clear when the evil Enchantress kidnaps the twin's mother. To save her, the twins once again venture into the Land of Stories to find their mother, and to get her home safe again.

Both of these books were written by Chris Colfer, who is perhaps best known for playing Kurt Hummel on the TV show, Glee. He has demonstrated a new talent by authoring these two books. While some of the material in this book may be a bit scary for the youngest of readers, upper-level elementary schoolers and above will simply love these stories.

While many of the characters in this story will be familiar to you, be forewarned that Colfer has taken great liberties in creating this fantastical world. For example, Goldilocks is an outlaw and Red Riding Hood is a Queen - and both women, along with other fairy tale characters, come to the aid of the twins as they endure a series of heart pounding adventures as they search for their mother.

The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns is an engaging book that will delight readers, and listeners, of all ages. Be prepared to laugh, be prepared to cry, and be prepared to pace the floor restlessly as you wait to find out if there will be a third installment in the Land of Stories series.
