If you have any experience potty training both boys and girls, you already know that boys can be much more of a challenge! If you are new to this unique human endeavor, take my word - I've done both and boys are much harder to train. For both newbies and old hands, Dr. Caroline Fertleman, a pediatrician and Simone Cave have written a handy guide that will take the mystery out of potty training boys and hopefully, make the transition from diapers to using a toilet quick and relatively painless for all parties involved. Their book, Potty Training Boys the Easy Way takes the guess work out of potty training, offering not only a step-by-step guide on how to go about it as well as tips and suggestions on how to tell when your son is ready to begin potty training, how you can learn to relax during the process, and how to identify medical problems that might be interfering in the potty training process.

The information in Potty Training Boys the Easy Way is organized intuitively, and assumes that you've never tried potty training a boy before. Therefore it starts at the beginning - how to tell if your son is ready, and the steps you can take early on to help prepare your son for the day his training begins. It then walks you through the entire training regiment, along with tips on what to do if your son decides not to be cooperative or has some unusual fears or medical problems that might complicate his training. The authors also walk you through the sometimes difficult aspects of night time training, and what to do if an accident does occur so as not to upset you, or your son over the accident. They also tackle 'family' problems that might arise, especially if a new child recently joined the family before or during the training period. They also cover the period after training has technically ended - such as his first trip to the bathroom without telling anyone that he is going, the rare accidents that might occur, or what to do if he happens to have a setback or two.

Throughout, the authors speak with authority, and clearly delineate both the psychological and physical aspects of potty training. The book is filled with a host of helpful tips and suggestions that will make the entire process easier for all parties involved, and how to handle special situations such as teaching your son to go to the bathroom standing up if you don't have an adult male figure in your life to handle that delicate issue for you.

Although I've been through all this before, and therefore consider myself a season pro in this arena - I still learned some new 'tricks' from this book. For someone who has never gone through this process before, this book will be invaluable. It will save you from having to go through a lot of trail and error, and the information in this book will make the entire process much less stressful than going it alone. This is an excellent book that is an essential addition to the volume of books on parenting.
