Commanding a naval vessel is, in many regards, similar to acting as the CEO of a corporation or a mayor of a town. The size of the ship dictates the size of your organization, and to command successfully you must be able to effectively lead and manage your crew. The only real difference in commanding a ship and a company is that when you work for the navy, you don't get paid based upon profits, you can be reassigned at will, and your company tends to be rather well armed. Otherwise, a good commander needs many of the same skills and traits that you would expect to find in a successful CEO.

Captain D. Michael Abrashoff is the former commander of the USS Benfold, a guided missile destroyer that can carry a complement of about 350 officers and enlisted sailors. When Abrashoff took over command of the ship, it was well known as an unruly ship with low morale and low performance ratings. At the time he assumed command, he was also one of the youngest commanders in the United States Navy. Utilizing a method he calls Grass Roots Leadership, Abrashoff quickly turned the ship from one of the poorest performing ships in the Navy, to one of the best. He also increased productivity, morale, and military precision on the ship. He did this by getting to know each and every member in his crew, and by making everyone feel that they shared in the responsibility of running the ship and that their input and jobs were important. Once the men and women on the ship truly understood and felt that they were making a valuable contribution to the ship's mission, they began to take pride in their work and therefore worked better and harder, and they found their work more enjoyable!

In It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy Abrashoff explains how his Grass Roots Leadership methodology works, how he used it on the USS Benfold, and how you can employ these same tactics in your business. This is a powerful and mind-altering book that will make you take a new look at your own leadership style, and it is bound to make you change how you currently handle the people under your 'command'.

It's Your Ship will help you take command of your own ship or business, and help you learn how to see your operation through the eyes of the people working in it - and from that vantage point you will see where changes need to be made and how you motivate your workers to excel. Not only does this book offer you keen insights into how to be an effective leader, but it also offers remarkable insights into how naval vessels are commanded and the day to day life on board one of these technological wonders. By far this is the best book on business leadership that I've ever read or listened to. Highly recommended to mangers at all levels, as well as anyone in a leadership position, and to those wishing to obtain such a position.
