We've all read stories about explorers, and sat on the edge of our seats as they endured the unendurable to accomplish the impossible, and we've all breathed a sigh of relief when they made it home safely. But what about all those explorers and adventurers who never made it home? In Vanished! Explorers Forever Lost, Evan Balkan tackles this very question by examining seven expeditions from which the key explorers never returned. In doing so, he provides background and biographical information on each explorer, or group of explorers, what they were doing when they disappeared, and what is thought to have happened to them. By necessity, all this information is presented concisely, which might not satisfy all readers. Luckily, detailed biographies of most of these explorers already exist, so after reading this book you can expand your horizons by reading the biographies of any of the explorers whose stories have sparked your interest.

The explorers whose stories are documented in this book include Ambrose Bierce, Percy Fawcett, Glen and Bessie Hyde, Everett Ruess, Amelia Earhart and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Michael Rockefeller, and Johnny Waterman. Many of these stories are well known, such as the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Michael Rockefeller. Others, such as the stories of Johnny Waterman (who disappeared climbing Mount Hunter, in Alaska) and Percy Fawcett (who disappeared into the Amazonian jungle looking for a mythical lost city) are less well-known. All of the stories, however, have been in circulation for years and if you are a fan of these types of stories, you are likely to already know the basic mystery surrounding all these explorers. All these stories are gripping, if for no other reason that nobody really knows what happened to any of these intrepid explorers. Granted, theory upon theory abounds that seeks to offer up a solution to these various mysteries, but none has yet to be proven. In composing this book, Balkan has provided an overview of the key theories surrounding each of these disappearances, as well as tossing his own theories into the mix.

This is a fun book to read, especially if you are a fan of mysteries. I'm not saying that this book is fun because the stories are funny, they're not. The reason that this is a fun book is because this book gives you the opportunity to play armchair detective and come up with your own solutions to these properly unsolvable mysteries. Along the way you also get to enjoy a good yarn. All in all, Vanished! Explorers Forever Lost a great book for readers of all ages.
