Change is everywhere, in our lives, in nature, and in our spirit. Even when it results in a positive outcome, change can still be difficult to navigate. In The Gift of Change: Spiritual Guidance for a Radically New Life, Marianne Williamson offers solid, uplifting advice on how to accept and make a successful transition through change. This book is permeated with the simple philosophy that 'every cloud has a silver lining'. Yes, bad things may happen, but something good can be made from even the worst situations - it is just that when bad things happen, we might have to work a little harder at finding the good.
The way to find the good when bad things happen, according to Williamson, is to accept God's love, forgive those that have sinned against us, and to actively work at changing ourselves for the better. Williamson sees this personal transformation as a form of spiritual psychotherapy, a technique that she has been fostering and lecturing about for years.
Serving as self-study / self-guide manual on personal transformation, The Gift of Change is divided into topical chapters such as:
From Negative Thinking to Positive Love
From Anxiety to Atonement
From Asking God to Change the World to Praying That He Change Us
From Focus on Guilt to Focus on Innocence
From Spiritual Death to Rebirth
From Your Plan to God's Plan
In all, this book contains ten topical chapters on various types of change, and an introductory chapter on change, a general introduction to the text, and a 'what comes next' section at the end of the book. At first glance, Williamson's advice may seem simplistic, but once you really stop to think about what she is saying, you'll find that her advice, simple though it may seem, is really profound and potentially life altering. Although this book is technically a general book in spirituality that is nondenominational, it does have a strong Christian bent.
The Gift of Change will help teach you to be more willing to accept change in your life, and it will inspire you to actively seek change that will enhance your spirituality and relationships with yourself and those around you. This is a must read for anyone seeking to grow spiritually and to learn to accept that which we often have little or no control over.
