Microbes are everywhere - in the air, in our bodies, on every surface we touch - but what exactly are microbes and what purpose do they serve? Idan Ben-Barak, who holds degrees in medical science and microbiology from the Hadassah School of Medicine at the University of Jerusalem, answers these questions and many more in his informative book The Invisible Kingdom.

Suitable for readers of all ages and comprehendable to those with no science background, this book provides a concise and exciting overview of what microbes are, where they are found, as well as explaining how they can harm us while at the same time being necessary for life to exist as we know it. Ben-Barak explores the world of microbes using non-technical terms, a dash of humor, and intriguing bits of trivia about microbes, making this book not only informative but entertaining as well. Along the way he also explains the origins of single-celled life and how, from this small beginning, all life that we now know was derived. On this journey you'll learn about DNA, RNA, and the differences between bacteria and viruses. He explains how germs mutate, how they cause disease, and how microbes are used in making such delectable items as yoghurt, beer, and bread. He also introduces the reader to the numerous scientists whose efforts have allowed us to take a glimpse into the world of microbes, and who have provided us with the weapons to combat many of the microbes which make us ill.

The Invisible Kingdom is a fun book to read, but be warned - if you are the slightest bit squeamish you might find the idea that thousands of microbes are living in and on your body a bit disconcerting. As well, if you are not clean freak now, you might find yourself becoming one after reading this book! The Invisible Kingdom is a must read for anyone curious about the invisible creatures that live with, and in us. It is also a perfect book for the budding scientist in your life, or for any curious youth who might discover within it's pages an unsuspected calling to become a microbiologist or bacteriologist. This is a must-have addition for all middle school and high school libraries as well as for public libraries serving school age and adult readers.

The Invisible Kingdom is available from Read How You Want, an on-demand publisher that makes books available in a variety of formats including Braille, DAISY, and five different large print formats. This range of formats makes this, and other books, available not only to visually impaired individuals, but also anyone with a reading or physical disability that makes reading standard print books difficult.
