Janet Evanovich is back with another fast paced Stephanie Plum story. The newest installment in this series is called Smokin' Seventeen, and as you can guess from the title, this is the seventeenth book in the series. If you have found Evanovich's more recent books a bit of a disappointment, you'll enjoy this one. It is not as energetic as some of the earlier Plum books, but much, much better than the recent ones in the series. In part because it has a solid plot, and has Evanovich's hallmark humor without going overboard.

In this installment, the story centers around a host of bodies, dead bodies, that keep turning up on the future site of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds, along with a note that reads "For Stephanie." It falls to Stephanie to track down the killer, before the killer adds her to the collection of bodies that pepper this story. The killer is not the only person after Stephanie, as she is also the target of her bevy of on-and-off-again boyfriends, each of whom is after her to finally make one of them an honest man - as are her various family members who are anxious to see her wed. To heap even more on her plate, Stephanie still has her old job to do, of tracking down bail jumpers.

Smokin' Seventeen is a quick and easy read filled with the characters you have come to love, including the funeral addicted Grandma Mazur, the gun totting Lula, and Stephanie's main men - Ranger and Morrelli. This is a story that will not tax your brain. It is simply a fun book to read. Consequently, it a perfect book to take along to the beach or pool, or anywhere, where you're attention might need to be split between reading and watching the kids - or if you're still in the market, the bathing suit clad bodies that might just be parading up and down in front of you.
