This novel is about Maximum Ride, called Max, a fifteen year old girl with unique leadership abilities and her friend Angel, a girl of seven with powers to sense the presence of people coming toward her before they can be seen and the ability to read minds. Both, along with others, were manufactured in a laboratory by combining human and bird DNA. Max's boyfriend Fang flew off, and very handsome Dylan is using the opportunity to establish a relationship with her. Dylan was engineered to love Max.

Max is told that other beings were created since the batch that produced her, that the current human civilization will end and the new beings need her as a leader, and since she will die someday she needs to produce children with her abilities who will lead the survivors after her death.

Several things happen. Fang assembles a group of other creatures and is trying unsuccessfully to lead them. He feels that Max is not the only person who can lead the world. One of the new beings that is created is Max II, who Fang is overly attracted to. A group called Doomsday is formed with the goal to take over the world and clean it to accept their views.

Will Max and Fang join efforts? Will they or one of them discover the Doomsday plot? Who will assume leadership of the world? Will Max agree to bear children?
