In The Quickie by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge, Patterson once again delivers a fast-paced, emotionally rich story that holds your interest and touches your heart. This gripping tale is about a woman who decides to get 'even' with her cheating husband by having a one night stand. Personally I've never understood the logic in this tactic - but it makes a great plot device in this book.
Lauren Stillwell's decision to have a quickie to get even with her husband turns terribly wrong when during her tryst with a fellow cop, she witnesses a horrible crime. As a NYPD detective she has not only a moral, but a civil duty to report what she has witnessed. However, if she comes forth with what she saw, everyone will know that she cheated on her husband, and her reputation, and possibly even her job will be at stake. If she doesn't, a killer could go free and she'll have to spend the rest of her life living not only with her guilt - but a horribly dark secret that could turn on her at any moment. A situation that becomes even more dire when she is assigned a case that intersects with the crime she witnessed.
I don't want to give too much of the plot line away as the shocking twists and turns in this book are most of the fun of listening to it. The rest is made up of listening to Mary Stuart Masterson's evocative voice as she brings to live the varied characters in this thrilling book. Masterson is a seasoned actress who has appeared in more than 25 films, as well as in numerous plays and musicals.
The Quickie is a solid offering from Paterson. It is a quick read with an unexpected outcome, and it is ideal for listening to in the car, at the beach, or while waiting in line - for anything! Happy listening....
