The Crossroads is a collection of three, pulp stories penned by L. Ron Hubbard, the author of the bestselling science fiction series, Mission Earth and the novel, Battlefield Earth. (Unfortunately, neither the series, nor Battlefield Earth are currently available in large print. Hopefully this situation will soon change!) He is also known as the father of the Scientology movement. Hubbard was a prolific writer who had more than a hundred and fifty short stories published in pulp magazines between 1934 and 1950, before embarking upon his career as a science fiction novelist. Writing during the heyday of the pulp fiction movement, Hubbard used fifteen different pseudonyms, and wrote works in almost as many genres including science fiction, westerns, adventure tales, mysteries, tales from the Orient, fantasy, and more. Galaxy Press has begun to reissue the complete 'pulp' works of L. Ron Hubbard in book form. The series title is Stories from the Golden Age, and each volume contains a collection of short stories and novellas, or a complete novel. Best of all, these books are also being issued in large print by Read How You Want. The Crossroads is one of the books in this series from the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction.
In The Crossroads you will find three stories
The Crossroads - in the title story we find a farmer taking his wares to town, when he becomes lost he soon finds himself in another place, and another time. (a satirical science fiction story)
Borrowed Glory - a story in which an old woman regains her youth for forty-eight hours, but at what price? (science fiction/fantasy)
The Devil's Rescue - deals with a man who has been lost at sea for days, and is willing to take help from any quarter... (a seafaring adventure mixed with a bit of supernatural fantasy)
This book also includes an excerpt from Hubbard's Story The Tramp, along with a glossary of terms from the age of pulp fiction, information on L. Ron Hubbard's writing career, as well as a short bio of this prolific writer.
All three stories in The Crossroads are excellent in their own rights, however the combination of the three shows just how imaginative Hubbard really was, and it was a real treat to read these stories. They were a pure delight to read, both from the viewpoint of being a fan of Hubbard's science fiction works, and simply from the viewpoint of someone who likes to read a good tale - no matter who the author is. If you've never read any of Hubbard's works of fiction before, you cannot go wrong by starting with The Crossroads, and if you are an old fan, you will find, as I did, that this volume will take you on a journey back to your childhood when you eagerly awaited the publication of each new edition of your favorite pulp magazine.
A few of the other volumes in the Stories from the Golden Age series that are available in large print are:
and many more short story collections by L. Ron Hubbard...
