Changes in the Roman Missal, Third Edition
A Chart in Large Print

Upcoming Changes in the Catholic Mass
By Angela Evans - August 30, 2011

As you may know, on November 27, 2011 (the First Sunday of Advent), the Catholic Church in the United States will begin to use the new, third edition of The Roman Missal. This new edition includes many liturgical changes to the Catholic Mass, including revised translations of some prayers to make them adhere more closely to the original Latin. Within this new edition you will also find the addition of new prayers for new saints, and even some new musical material. For parishioners, perhaps the biggest change that will be noticed is that there are several places in the Mass where the congregational responses have changed. For example, in the past when the Priest greeted the congregation with the words, "The Lord be with you." The congregation would reply, "And also with you." Under the new format, the congregational response will now be "And with your spirit."

While there are many charts and guides currently available in standard print to acquaint the people with these new changes, there was until recently, nothing available in large print. However, thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Virginia M. Woolf Foundation, this oversight has been corrected. The Foundation has published an 18-point, large print, detailed chart that illustrates the present sections of the Missal that will be changing, alongside of the new text that will be instituted in November. This chart also includes commentaries that help to explain the changes and to explain the historic and religious significance of the various prayers.

The chart, entitled Changes in Roman Missal, Third Edition is based upon Roman Missal Formational Materials provided by the Secretariat for the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and is being provided free-of-charge by the Virginia M. Woolf Foundation. This chart is contained in a forty-nine page, tagged PDF file, and it can be read online or printed out in a variety of formats - for example you can print out the entire file, or just the chart of the textual changes, or just the commentaries. The PDF files come preformatted so that it will automatically print out in a 18-point type face.

The PDF chart can be downloaded by clicking the link at the top of this page. This file does not contain the entire Roman Missal, just the chart listing the changes between the second and third editions of the Roman Missal.
