If you are just starting out investigating your family's genealogy, the fifth edition of Genealogy Online for Dummies, by Matthew L. Helm and April Leigh Helm is the place to start. This essential reference book, now available in large print, serves as an introductory text to the science and art of genealogical research. The bulk of the book concentrates on teaching you how to do as much of your research as possible, online. To this end, the authors not only offer a plethora of helpful advice and tips, but also information, including addresses for key websites, from which to start your search, how to organized and verify the material you gather, and tips on where to go to learn more about getting started in Genealogy and family history. They also offer some unique tips on how to share the information that you find with others.
One of the best features of this book is that the authors do not concentrate solely on American resources - an important point seeing as most Americans have ancestors that were born in other countries. As such, genealogy resources in other countries are listed, as are tips on where to find English translations of foreign archives and databases. While such translations are not always available, the author's advice will save you hours of searching for those that are available. They also provide specific information geared to those investigating American Indian and African ancestry, to name a few. They also provide insights in the relatively new, but growing field of tracing your ancestry through your genes and the ins and outs of DNA testing.
The authors of this book, Matthew L. Helm and April Leigh Helm are seasoned genealogy professionals. They have written a number of well-received books on genealogy including Family Tree Maker for Dummies and Your Official American Online Guide to Genealogy Online. While this book does not offer much new information for seasoned genealogists, it is an essential introductory text for those just beginning to research their family's history.
