Are you starting a new business? Just had a book published? Or are you an artist who wants to publicize your work? If so, take the time to read 6 Steps to Free Publicity, by Marcia Yudkin, now in its third edition. This handy book offers a step-by-step guide to starting and running a publicity campaign and it offers a plethora of tried and true tips on how to garner publicity for any business or project. The methods that Yudkin describes cost no more than your time and perhaps the use of some office supplies or gas to get to various venues.
In the pages of this book, Yudkin, who has written eleven books, explains the ins and outs of how publicity is garnered, why it is important, and how to gain your own publicity without having to shell out thousands of dollars to publicity 'experts'. She covers just about every angle from making a guest appearance on TV or radio to writing press releases, and tips on how to develop an online presence and how to get, and keep, your new found fans.
The information in this text is organized into five main sections:
Getting Started with Publicity
This section explains what publicity is, how to think like a publicity expert, and how to get comfortable with all the exposure you will garner.
Writing to Get Pubicity
The second section of this book explains the ins and outs of news/press releases and how to write them. It details how to create and use a media kit or online media room. Yudkin details how and why you should write articles on your 'subject' in order to get your name 'out there' as well as offering tips on writing pitch letters and writing a column or advertorial (she also explains exactly what an advertorial is).
Speaking and Acting for Publicity
This third section covers what might be the most difficult aspect for most people - public speaking. Yudkin offers tips on how to give speeches, as well as how to create venues for you to give a speech on your 'subject', how to get a spot on TV, radio, and/or the web, and the ins and outs of speaking for free, and for a fee.
Polishing Your Publicity Skills
Having mastered the basics of free publicity, section four takes your publicity efforts to the next level covering topics as diverse as dealing with reporters, overcoming writers' block and finding the time to 'do' all the publicizing you need to.
Keeping the Publicity Momentum Going
The final section in this book offers tips on how to keep your publicity campaign on the move - and in the public eye - over the long term.
6 Steps to Free Publicity is a useful and practical guide to the fundamentals of starting and running a publicity campaign. The information in this book can be applied to just about any project, and if you are diligent in seeking out and using free publicity opportunities, your project will greatly benefit from all the public attention that you will garner. This is not to say that this is the best or only book on the subject, but it is a top contender and should be read by anyone serious about running their own publicity campaign or who want to 'get the word out' about, well, anything from a rally, to a new business, to simply promoting yourself.
6 Steps to Free Publicity is available from Read How You Want, an on-demand publisher that makes books available in a variety of formats including Braille, DAISY, and five different large print formats.
