Clare Ballenger is a therapist who specializes in helping people cope with the numerous emotional problems that can arise after a divorce - including dealing with a broken heart. So, when her husband dies, you'd think that Clare would be a wiz at handling her own broken heart. This, however, is not the case, as Clare discovers that she is much better at teaching others how to deal with grief and regret than she is at following her own injunctions. As part of her job as a Divorce Coach, Clare is working at setting up a retreat on the Alabama coast on a piece of property owned by her former mother-in-law. She plans to use this retreat to hold numerous workshops and meetings to help other women deal with their broken hearts. In the process of setting up the retreat, Clare meets Lex, a Navy Captain who is in the process of recovering from his own failed marriage. Will Clare be able to work through her own problems and mend her own heart, or will she forever be one of those therapists who say do what I say, not what I do?

Clare's story is told in Cassandra King's moving novel, Queen of Broken Hearts, which is read by Anne Twomey in the abridged audio edition of the book. Twomey is a professional actress who has appeared on Broadway, in several films, and in a variety of television shows ranging from comedies to police dramas. In addition to Queen of Broken Hearts, King is also the author of Making Waves, The Sunday Wife, and The Same Sweet Girls.

The Queen of Broken Hearts is an emotional and well-written novel that really makes you care about Clare and one that will have you rooting for Clare to find a solution for her problems. In addition to Clare, King has peppered this novel with a host of memorable and equally troubled characters, including Clare's daughter Haley who has been abandoned by her husband, and Clare's best friend, Dory, whose marriage is also floundering. Queen of Broken Hearts is a delightful book full of southern charm, romance, and wonderfully wrought characters that will finagle their way into your heart!
