The Blood-Dimmed Tide is the second volume in Rennie Airth's John Madden mystery series. As the story open John Madden, a former Scotland Yard Inspector is enjoying his well-earned retirement. He is living on a farm in Surrey surrounded by his wife, Helen, and their family. On the whole, they are getting on rather well. Helen is still working as a physician while Madden is finding retirement rather to his liking. The year is 1932 and while whispers of the conflict to come can be heard, the war is still years off and no one can even imagine the horrors and deprivations to come. It can be said, that in 1932 England was a country at peace and life for her people was one of relative comfort. This sense of peace and tranquility is shattered for Madden when he stumbles upon the mutilated body of Alice Bridger, a twelve-year-old girl who had gone missing while walking to a friend's house. Worse, he's sure that her killer has struck before.

Wrenched out of retirement by this heinous crime, Madden calls on his former colleagues, including Chief Inspector Angus Sinclair, to help him catch this diabolic killer before he can strike again. What begins as a rather straight forward hunt for a psychopath soon becomes rather complicated as this local case soon takes on international implications as the trail lead to Germany and beyond.

The Blood-Dimmed Tide is a gripping mystery that is part police procedural and part thriller. Well plotted and methodical in detail, this is a mystery that is sure to tickle the fancy of anyone who likes to try to solve 'the mystery' before the detective does. While the story is full of unexpected twists and turns, Airth doesn't try to deceive the reader with false clues or red herrings - rather he lays out all the information and clues that you'll need to solve the crime - if you can find them!
