This is an interesting story, an easy read from page 1 to page 437. There are essentially two plots that intertwine. The first, written in the first person in a chatty style, focuses on the private eye Kinsey Millhone in 1988. She sees a woman stealing clothes in a store and reports the crime. The woman is arrested, but is later found beneath a bridge, an apparent suicide. Kinsey is hired by the woman's fiancé, a somewhat naïve fellow, to find out what really happened. She also sees that this woman has an accomplice, a younger aggressive woman. She tries to make a citizen's arrest of this second woman and is nearly killed. This is the beginning of an adventure that leads Kinsey and readers into a fascinating tale, which includes interesting characters and murder. The second plot, written in the third person, is in two parts that come together. One examines the affair of a likable gang leader who is tired of his life of crime and his violent younger brother who wants his job, and the other is about a beautiful woman who is dissatisfied with her marriage and her rich husband who is having an affair with his secretary.
