In the normal course of events, the theft of Uranium 235 and other precious metals from a vault is likely to make the headlines and to garner the notice of political and military factions. However, when such thefts begin occurring the world over, and are accompanied by strange lights in the sky - panic is a more likely result. Or at least rampant speculation that aliens are involved! To get to the heart of the problem, Neil Vaughan, a scientist and MI5 agent, is called in to investigate these strange phenomena. His job is, technically, quite simple. He is charged with the task of discovering if the thefts are the work of a brazen gang of robbers? Or if the thieves are, as some have hypothesized, evil denizens of another world.
Helping him in his quest to find the thieves, is Ann Delmar, an American Intelligence Agent. Their quest to uncover the truth is complicated when they are abducted and thrown into a life or death struggle upon which the fate of the world rests.
Sword of Damocles was written by Sydney J. Bounds, and like most of his books, this is a quick paced, diverting read that will delight both mystery and science fiction fans. While primarily a mystery that centers upon uncovering the truth behind the theft of the Uranium 235, this story does have ample science fiction elements woven into it. These include, but are not limited to space ships and millions of people fleeing a feared alien invasion. In short, this is a fun book to read that will entertain without taxing your intellect.
Sword of Damocles can be purchased directly from Ulverscroft, the parent company of the Linford Mystery Library.
