Whether you are a comic book writer or artist, or just a fan of comic books, you'll want to read the The Writer's Guide to the Business of Comics by Lurene Haines. This marvelous book essentially covers, well, the basics of the business of comic books from a general overview of the industry to submission guidelines for various comic book publishing houses. Best of all, this book includes interviews with thirty comic book professionals, as well as quotes from a range of writers, artist, and comic book publishers.

For the comic book writer, this book covers a wealth of information that is invaluable for anyone pursing publication by an established publisher. In addition to providing a general overview of the comic book industry - as well as tips on requesting submission guidelines and the necessity of approaching the entire process on a professional and business like footing, Haines also covers topics such as comic book formats, creating an efficient work space, preparing samples of your work, getting business cards, basic business skills, and tips on submitting your work. She also includes a glossary of industry specific terms, samples of business and legal forms, and several resource lists covering items such as writing software, conventions, comic book publishers, and professional associations.

The Writer's Guide to the Business of Comics is not a how-to-write-comic-books book, rather it is an introductory book on the business side of the comic book industry. Haines' advice is practical, easy to understand and apply, and following it will save you from possibly years of trial-and-error as you learn to negotiate the maze that lead to publication. More important, following her advice will (assuming you have honed your skills and are a talented writer) increase your chances of finding a publisher for your work, or of being hired as a staff writer. I highly recommend The Writer's Guide to the Business of Comics to novice comic book writers looking for an inside track to getting published, or getting work in the comics industry. As with any field, getting into comics can be difficult, but this book will help you get your foot inside the door, and keep it there.
