Some writer's may never have heard about the Saranac Writer's Conference, so let me begin with a brief introduction to this event. From 1976-1980 a premier writer's conference was held at the Canaras Conference Center on the banks of Saranac Lake in Upstate New York, and it was sponsored by Fiction International and St. Lawrence University. This was an exclusive writer's conference, and the event featured a writing faculty among the best, including Joyce Carol Oats, Margaret Atwood, Annie Dillard, E.L. Doctorow, and many more. For all too many years the memorabilia and the recorded interviews that were conducted at the conference were forgotten, locked away in storage. That is, until now...

In The Lost Saranac Interviews: Forgotten Conversations with Famous Writers, Joe David Bellamy and Connie Bellamy have recovered some of the lost interviews with many of the teaching faculty. Joe was one of the organizers of the Saranac Writer's Conference, and this book is infused with his personal reminiscences and hands-on experience. In compiling this book, the Bellamy's have taken pains to reproduced these interviews in their entirely, and word-by-word, exactly as they were recorded during the conference. These interviews provide a unique glimpse into the lives and thoughts of these enigmatic writers, and they offer candid insights into their unique writing processes. In addition, this book is enhanced by the inclusion of photographs from the event, as well as memorabilia associated with the event, including flyers and posters.

The author's whose interviews are reproduced in this gorgeously bound book include Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oats, Ann Beattie, Annie Dillard, Gail Godwin, Jayne Anne Phillips, and Russell Banks. In addition to the formal interviews, you'll also find several 'conversations' recorded at the conference between such notables as: The Lost Saranac Interviews is an engaging book to read, and both writers and students of literature will find it filled with a wealth of unexpected and edifying information - both about the writer's themselves, and their craft. It also highlights the importance that a writer's conference can have on a writer's career and outlook. This book will make a great gift (hint, hint) for writers' of all levels - from the complete novice to the seasoned professional!
