All writers, no matter what genre they write in, share one thing in common - they want to get their work published. While there are many avenues available that lead to traditional publishing opportunities, this may not be the right route for you. For those with the spirit and the determination to 'go it alone' self-publishing can be a profitable and gratifying route by which to get your work published. For Comic Book writers, one of the best books on self-publishing that I've come across is Tony C. Caputo's How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book: The Complete Resource Guide to the Business, Production, Distribution, Marketing, and Promotion of Comic Books. As the title suggests, this book cover all the basics and after reading through this volume you will have a good idea whether or not you want to try self-publishing your comic book. Although geared more toward someone who is planning on starting a comic book publishing company, it will also prove invaluable to someone interested in only publishing their own comic books.

Filled with practical advice that covers just about everything from outfitting your office to acting as your own public relations agent, How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book is a must have book if you are considering or working toward self-publishing your own comic book. Even if you are trying to place your comic book with a traditional publisher, you will find that this book is filled with valuable information that will help you better understand the publication process - and the money side of the comic book business.

In How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book, Caputo discusses a range of topics including how to organize your company, trademarks, copyrights, printers, contracts, distribution, sales, marketing strategies, promoting your comic book, bookkeeping, financing your comic book, and so much more. Caputo is a well-known comic book publisher, and he was also on the Board of Directors of the Comics Magazine Association of America (CMAA), so he knows what he is talking about. This book includes many useful samples of documents you will be dealing with including contracts, letters, invoices, income statements, and news releases. Also, included are samples of the make up of a comic book page from the first sketch and lettering to a partially colored page and a completed comic book page. Caputo also provides tips that will help you sell your comic books in both domestic and foreign markets.

How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book will not teach you how to write or draw a comic book, what it shows you is how to take a complete comic book (pictures and script) and how to publish and market it. Self-publishing is not for the faint of heart. Success depends not only on having a creative and dynamic product, but also on business savvy, hard work, and perseverance. However, if you have what it takes, you may well find that self-publishing your own comic book, or running your own comic book publishing company, is the ideal path to success for you!
