The War of the Worlds is one of the many classics that most people come to know either through the movie versions of the story, or from the equally classic radio rendition of the story that aired 1938. This broadcast became an instant classic when thousands of American's fled their homes, thinking that Martian's were really invading the Earth!
This ground breaking science fiction by H. G. Wells was originally published in 1898. It chronicles the events surrounding the Martian invasion of England, and one man's struggle to survive and help defeat this deadly foe. Told in the first person, from the viewpoint of the narrator, this story moves at a break neck speed. Its story is engrossing and profound and will thrill not only fans of science fiction, but anyone looking for a unique tale of adventure.
A man well ahead of his time, Wells decorated this book with 'advanced' technologies, realistic descriptions of the Martian's space technology and weaponry. This story also offers modern readers a clear warning - about underestimating the 'enemy' and about destroying the environment.
When the Martians first land on Earth, they are taken more as a novelty than a threat - a costly mistake. As well, Wells gives the Martians a valid reason for wanted to take over the Earth. Mars is dying, exhausted from over use and over population - a fate which may soon be the Earths. This story not only chronicles the invasion and the defense raised by the stalwart English, but it also takes a hard look at how men react under stress and war time conditions. Many of the effects he chronicles in this book, turn out to be only too real, as was proven during the trench warfare of World War I.
A phenomenal story, this Dover large print edition of
