With over 40,000 entries, Webster's New Explorer Large Print Dictionary is admirably suited as a basic home or school dictionary. It was created in cooperation with the editors of Merriam-Webster and all the entries conform to standard dictionary format. Each vocabulary entry includes a pronunciation guide, a short definition of the word, and the parts-of-speech are labeled. This dictionary also includes a lists of abbreviations.

This dictionary has been well designed to accommodate the needs of those people who desire a large print, easy to read dictionary. This book was printed on off-white paper. This helps eliminate problems with glare that many people experience when reading books printed on white, or worse, bright white paper. As well, the type face used is large, and the letters are crisp and dark. The font used presents very clear lettering that is easy to read. Ease of reading has been further enhanced by having all main entries and associated vocabularies, such as the inflected forms and variant spellings of the main entries, printed in bold face. I find that this feature is handy for scanning the text when looking up a word.

Webster's New Explorer Large Print Dictionary has also received the seal of approval of NAVH, the National Association for Visually Handicapped. NAVH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the 'partially seeing', and NAVH has set the standards against which large print books are evaluated. For a large print book to receive the NAVH seal of approval it must meet NAVH's high standards for quality, in both text and formatting.

Overall, this is an excellent basic dictionary. The New Explorer Large Print Dictionary is a sturdy hardback book that contains 754 pages. Despite its size it is surprising light and easy to handle. It is also, in my opinion, an extremely reasonablely priced book. It will definitely serve the needs of many of the people who desire a large print dictionary.
